· The General Training version is for people who want to migrate to an English-speaking country to take a training program below degree level or simply gain professional experience. In other words, the A1 exam it would be the ideal test if your reasons are for work, training, or job training.
· The Academic version is an option for those who are interested in pursuing university studies, either undergraduate or postgraduate. Especially, they are also used when you want to apply for membership in a professional organization.
IELTS test sections
First of all, it is important that if you are going to apply for registration in an organization, you make sure that you are taking the correct test.
The IELTS test has several sections that measure different skills: listening, speaking, writing, and reading.
Listening comprehension and oral expression are the same in both types of exams.
However, the writing and reading comprehension sections are somewhat different. In the general IELTS test, the texts that you will be able to read will be more every day, from day to day.
On the contrary, in the academic IELTS exam, the subject matter will be more complex and analytical.
To complete the IELTS exam you will have a maximum of two hours and 45 minutes. The sequence is the following:
· Listening (auditory): 30 minutes, with 4 sections that group 40 items.
· Reading (reading expression): 60 minutes, with 3 sections of 40 items.
· Writing (written expression): 60 minutes, where you must write two texts, the first of 150 words and the second of 250 words.
· Speaking (oral): 10 to 15 minutes.
IELTS validity and results
As it is a global exam, the IELTS evaluates the level of English without preferences between British or American English. This premise is precisely what gives it international recognition in a large number of countries.
Among them, are the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and Ireland, and more than a thousand North American universities and colleges.
The grade
Once the test is done, unlike other official exams that take a long time to answer with results, the IELTS is known in about 13 days (two weeks).
The grade varies from 1, “non-user” only uses words in isolation, to 9, the “expert” level, which reflects a fluent level of the language.
Keep in mind that getting a 6 is the minimum to demonstrate adequate knowledge of English and that the validity of the results you obtain will be two years.
What is the Validity Period of the IELTS test? Does it expire?
IELTS scores are valid for two full years from the date of the test taken. The score of the IELTS is valid for two years from the date mentioned on the IELTS result form. This means that if you appear on 1 April 2023 for the IELTS exam, the IELTS score will be valid until March 31, 2025.
The IELTS score expiry date is indicated on the IELTS certificate. Both IELTS General and the IELTS Academic Exam have the same validity period of 2 years. The score is valid across the globe in most universities in different countries. The IELTS result is declared within 13 days after the candidate takes the IELTS exam.
A candidate must appear for the IELTS exam again once the score expires. If a candidate applies for a 3-year degree course in a university abroad based on the IELTS score, then by the time his/her degree is completed, his/her IELTS score validity will expire.
And just in case, he/she needs to study further or wants to apply for work and if his/her English proficiency level needs valid proof, then he/she will have to appear for the IELTS again to get admission into the next course or to get the job.
Besides that, it is imperative to know that once it has expired, the validity of the IELTS score cannot be extended further. A candidate can appear for the IELTS as many times as he wants, there is no limitation on that.
